Art for the heart is good. Artists are happy, aficionados are happy and investors are more than happy. All’s well for nothing can be ill, thanks to the rarely-mentioned-yet-all-important link, the exhibitors. Were it not for them, paintings would have adorned easels and little else.
One such "link" is tucked away in a quiet corner of the noisy Gariahat in Calcutta - The Chitrakoot Art Gallery. Established in 1984 by Dr Prakash Kejriwal and Mrs Sumitra Kejriwal, the gallery served as an outlet for contemporary artists in Bengal where they could display their work in the right environment. The Kejriwals provided the much-needed platform for the then-budding artists, promoting them in which ever way possible, helping them get a foothold in the ubiquitous world of Indian art.
The relationship grew and both, the artists and the gallery, earned and established their position in the market. And soon it became the hub of activity in Calcutta art circles, boasting of the largest collections of early and recent Bengali art. Bikash Bhattacharjee, Jogen Choudhary, Jamini Roy, Ganesh Pyne…you name it and Chitrakoot has it.
The past 13 years have seen a manifold increase in the gallery’s activity. Other than regular exhibitions, local buyers and sellers had both turned to the Kejriwals for their suggestions for investing in art. It was only a matter of time that the authenticity and credibility of Chitrakoot Art Gallery broke regional barriers.
Today collectors from all over the country have been doing the same.
Art collectors as well as art lovers have benefited immensely by following the experts advice at the gallery - not to mention the artists, who have regularly been selling their works through them. With all the concerned parties satisfied with Chitrakoot, the future spells sure success for the gallery.
